NAME: Ouyang Zizhen
CANON: The Untamed
CANON POINT: End of series
AGE: 16-17
BACKGROUND:
- The only child of the sect leader of Baling Ouyang Sect, making him the heir to the sect.
- Nothing particular of note in upbringing. Would have had all the normal training a cultivator would have had, including swordsmanship as this is his weapon of choice. Trusted by his father and other members of the sect to lead as he was shown to be in charge of a group of juniors from his sect at Yi City.
- Assumed to be acquainted with Jin Ling. Often seen in his presence, typically turning to him first or standing next to him. Baling Ouyang Sect is also associated with Yunmeng Jiang Sect, Jin Ling's second sect. Quite likely that he and Jin Ling spent some time together when they were younger.
- Zizhen and his subordinate juniors are enticed to Yi City with juniors of other sects where they become tormented by bamboo knocks in the dense fog and become lost.
- Run in WuXian and WangJi; saved from a group of fierce corpses by WangJi, but several juniors are poisoned. Zizhen assists in carrying Lan Jingyi until they find a shop with someone inside.
- A-Qing's corpse arrives once the juniors are cured. Zizhen observes her through a torn window screen and speaks of her in glowing terms.
- The arrival of "Xiao Xingchen" soon followed by the arrival of Song Lan. Zizhen stands with other juniors in point his sword at Song Lan, only for Xue Yang insist the juniors go outside so adults could talk. Hide in another building and observe the two fierce corpses of Wen Ning and Song Lan fighting.
- Goes with A-Qing to the place where the real Xiao Xingchen is being kept. Zizhen helps her after she shares her story with WuXian. Cries when she is killed.
- Stays with other juniors at a tavern after leaving Yi City. Tries to help mediate a disagreement Jin Ling has with Lan SiZhui.
- Is captured by ... someone and taken to the Burial Mounds along with other juniors in an attempt to lure cultivators to the Burial Mounds. Zizhen defends Wei WuXian when others keep saying he's the one responsible and protects his father when the group has to flee the Burial Mounds.
- Returns to the Lotus Pier with the other cultivators. After Jin Guangyao takes a group hostage at the temple and they free themselves, Zizhen arrives with a group of primarily Gusu Lan disciples, intending to help.
PERSONALITY: Compared to other juniors, Ouyang Zizhen tends to be a follower, frequently turning to look at others when there is some sort of agreement or consensus to be made, usually to Jin Ling. However, he also seems to know what he wants, frequently coming to his own conclusion before Jin Ling does, giving him a knowing nod.
This does not mean he is a pushover, making sure others hear him when he has something to say. At the Burial Mounds, among a large group of cultivators who believed WuXian guilty of kidnapping the juniors, he tells his father that he doesn't think WuXian is responsible since he had saved them previously, rolling his eyes when his father tells him off. He again yells, 'if they wanted to hurt us, they would have already' to get the cultivators who had lost their powers in the Demon Subduing Cave. When sect leader Yao starts to call out WuXian and wonder why he is still with them on the dock, again Zizhen points out that they wouldn't have made it as far as they had without WuXian's help.
Zizhen's bravery shines through in these moments. As he leads a group of other Baling Ouyang juniors, he has to be the one in charge, requiring a cool head. He also places himself firmly at the front of the group during the escape from the Burial Mounds, protecting his father still without his powers. In an alternate reality (Mo Dao Zu Shi), he joins other juniors in helping to fight the fierce corpses attacking them at the Burial Mounds, proud of his kill count. Back to his own reality, he is one of the relatively small party that goes to try to rescue those being held hostage at the temple.
He also attempts to be a peacekeeper. Jin Ling is known for having a bad temper and when he gets angry at Sizhui for a comment, Zizhen literally stands between the two of them and when Jin Ling is completely unable to budge, he attempts to dissuade the argument by saying they will be leaving tomorrow and shouldn't spend the last night arguing and that their food is getting cold. Almost deliberately, literally and figuratively, he is on neither side. Once Sizhui apologizes and HanGuang-Jun enters completely at random, he quickly ushers Jin Ling back to their table. He attempts the same when Jin Ling and Gusu Lan juniors begin to argue on the dock, but he makes the fundamental mistake of unintentionally calling Jin Ling out for his reaction, which in turn has completely the opposite effect.
His most unique quality occurs in Yi City. WuXian has the juniors look at the wandering corpse of A-Qing because it's a good learning lesson for them, both to not be scared and to learn to observe. Jin Ling goes for quantity, Lan Sizhui quality. Ouyang Zizhen describes her as having a "lively air mixed with her comely nature", is the first to notice her fox hairpin, and says she was bound to be a lovely girl. This leads to WuXian's appraisal of him as "you'll be the sentimental type after you grow up."
Indeed, his sentimentality continues. When they are helping A-Qing after WuXian uses empathy to find out what had happened to her, Zizhen is the one helping her to stand and guide her along. After she is killed and they bury her corpse outside of town, he and Lan Jingyi cry for her and Zizhen cries the hardest.
Besides A-Qing, he shows his compassion and sentimentality several other times. He attempts to comfort Jingyi when he has to eat WuXian's insanely spicy congee in order to cure his corpse poisoning, patting his back. When told they have to carry poisoned compatriots, he takes up this task without complaint. When Sizhui is looking at a grass butterfly and Jin Ling decides to question his age, Zizhen is clearly looking at the toys himself and is confused about why there seems to be a problem. When the other cultivators, including juniors and Lan Qiren, finally reach the temple where Jin Guangyao has been holding WuXian and company hostage after Guangyao is killed, Zizhen immediately plants himself in front of WuXian, inquiring rather persistently about the cut on his neck.
This does not mean that he's perfectly well behaved, still showing signs of immaturity. When Wen Ning is talking with Sizhui, either something he says or the way he says it makes both Zizhen and Jingyi start snickering during what is actually a serious conversation. When his father demands that he come over to him after his comment to Sect Leader Yao, Zizhen declares "I won't!" like a put-upon child and hides behind Sizhui. However, he still turns it back around that his father should be resting after having lost his spiritual energy when his father threatens to come and get him.
He also demonstrates a decidedly reckless side. One can claim it is unwise for a junior of a sect, even the heir, to be back talking multiple sect leaders including his own father. Whether he is correct or not, he chooses to yell his disagreements from across the dock where sect leaders Yao, Ouyang, and Jiang are standing, which does lead Jiang Cheng to comment in a low tone about it. Zizhen also deliberately points out his father's currently weakened state as a reason to justify not listening to him. In an alternate reality, he also fails to listen to his father trying to stop him from fighting corpses and nearly runs headlong into one such corpse, requiring a senior from another sect to haul him backward to save his life.
Of course, this all indicates he is probably spoiled. Out of the sect leaders present, his father seems to be one of the oldest. Combined with the fact that he is the only child of Baling Ouyang's sect leader, it is possible his father spoiled him as a child.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
In general, he is able to use cultivation as a disciple of Baling Ouyang Sect. What this means is that he is able to:
He is also able to fight with his sword and to be considered a proper member of the gentry class of cultivators, he would likely know how to fire a bow and arrow and ride a horse.
INVENTORY: his sword, a qiankun bag (bag of holding), and the clothes he has on his back
